Next ArtTalks at Museum Ludwig on two dates: November 7 at 10:30 am and December 5 at 18:30.
The exhibition Fluxus and Beyond: Ursula Burghardt, Benjamin Patterson at Museum Ludwig offers a fresh look at this 1960s art movement that still shapes the art world today. It spotlights two underappreciated artists: Ursula Burghardt (1928–2008) and Benjamin Patterson (1934–2016), both key figures in the Fluxus universe 🌍 🎯
Join us for a dive into Cologne’s vibrant 1960s art scene, a hub for international artists and the Fluxus movement. The colossal show starts with the early days of Fluxus in Cologne, Wiesbaden, and Wuppertal, set against the backdrop of postwar reconstruction and lingering Nazi ideologies.
Benjamin Patterson, a trained musician, played a pivotal role in the 1962 Fluxus festival before leaving the movement for a “normal job”—only to return to art later. Ursula Burghardt, who fled Nazi Germany, transformed everyday objects, often linked to women’s lives, into striking metalworks. Married to composer Mauricio Kagel, Burghardt’s creations invite us to see the ordinary in extraordinary ways 🎭
Fluxus artists, influenced by John Cage, blended music, performance, and life itself, creating events that brought together art, music, literature, and architecture. It was in the Cologne studio of German artist Mary Bauermeister in 1960 where Burghardt and Patterson first met.
