This exhibition confronts a critical gap: Black artistic movements from the 1920s–1950s that existed alongside canonical modernism but are absent from Museum Ludwig’s American collection.

We’ll explore works from the Harlem Renaissance, Négritude, and transatlantic networks of artists who migrated between America and Europe. Why were these voices systematically excluded? What structural and social forces shaped these absences?

We’ll anchor our looking with Lubaina Himid’s Le Rodeur: The Cabin (2017). What story is it telling, and whose perspective is it telling it from? What does the work highlight, and what does it leave in the background?

The museum is actively buying works to fill these gaps. This isn’t just historical correction. It’s an evolving conversation about how institutions collect, frame, and remember.

Expect close looking and respectful dialogue. Curious minds welcome. 💡
