“Masterpieces from the Wallraf Collection” – Beauty in Art

Wallraf-RichartzMuseum

As Christmas approaches with its flood of consumer delights and hectic activity, our upcoming ArtTalk will counter the universal trend of faster and more with a conscious reflection on qualities defined  in “beautiful” art. How do we define beauty today? What are our cultural criteria? Can we determine and articulate notions of beauty in visual art?  Is there such a thing as “slow art” and how can it be appreciated? We’ll choose several masterpieces from the Wallraf permanent collection and consider the meaning of beauty.
