ArtTalk 1912 Mission Moderne. On Thursday October 4th eleven of us were privileged to visit the 1912 Mission Moderne Exhibit at the Wallraf Richartz Museum in Cologne led by our wonderful, knowledgeable guide Karla. This exhibit recreates an exhibit that took place in Cologne 100 years ago called the Sonderbund Exhibition. At that time there were over 600 works of art. Now, the show has 130 masterpieces by a wide selection of artists,including Cézanne, Gauguin, Macke, Munch, Nolde, Picasso, Schiele, Signac and van Gogh to name just a few. Each room showcases the work from one or two countries. Where they could everything is displayed as it was 100 years ago. The Sonderbund was a group put together at the beginning of the 20th century to make modern art more popular. For its time this exhibit was both controversial and revolutionary. Although not shocking by today’s standards you can imagine what people viewing it for the first time 100 years ago would have thought. The exhibit includes sculpture and photography as well as paintings. Thank you to Karla for an amazing tour. The exhibit is on display until December 30th.
