Dear ArtTalkers,

The online text for the artist known “Ursula” (Schultze-Bluhm), show reads:

Ursula Schulz-Bluhm was born in Mittenwalde in 1921 and died in Cologne in 1999, is one of the most important 🫡 German women artists of the second half of the 20th century.

What do you mean you’ve never heard of her?!

The exhibition “Ursula – Das bin Ich. So What?” starts on March 18th. Museum Ludwig is dedicating the first comprehensive museum exhibition of paintings, graphics, and objects in more than 30 years. It is nothing less than a reconsideration 🎯of her life’s work.

Some big points. Uniquely independent. Is fascinated by the uncanny. Impossible combinations. Dream imagery and myth heat up her paintings and installations.

Ursula challenges authorities and artistic conventions by inventing new worlds in which old hierarchies are thrown overboard. She skillfully weaves the unimaginable into new visual worlds that invite us to explore. In some ways similar to her mentor the French artist Jean Dubuffet whose work we’ll consider too.

After an explosive start 🚀to the ArtTalk year 2023 with the Susanna show, we’ll pick up the thread in Museum Ludwig of female defiance of more darkly playful nature. Plus we’ll cross-reference by having a peak in the Surrealist space of the museum.

Defiance in the face of convention. Defiance in an artistic sense. Defiantly creating beauty. In the magical setting of Museum Ludwig*

Won’t you join us to discover the visual fascination 🔥 of the unconscious mind?

Artfully yours,
Karla Schlaepfer
