“Death and Vanity in Still Lives”
We’ll examine masterpieces of the great Dutch painters in the exquisite collection of the “Wallraf”. Still life paintings, particularly before 1700, often contained religious and allegorical symbolism relating to the objects shown. Painters pointed to human folly, vanity and one’s ultimate end by displaying beautiful luxury goods and carefully detailed rotting fruit as well as other fine things.
